My Role

UX/UI Designer in a team of 3 other designers

Company

HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology

Project Duration

Two month internship

The Problem

Genetic data is confusing, overwhelming, and often misinterpreted. How might we reduce cognitive load without compromising clinical accuracy or regulatory

requirements.

The Audience

Consumers are curious about genetic insights and are not patients seeking diagnosis.

The Constraints

Ethical clarity

Non-diagnostic language

Technical Debt

Trust and consent at first-class UX concerns

The UX Principles & Design Goals

1. Trust & Transparency

Users should be able to build confidence by being explicit about what GeneSight does and does not do.

2. User Controls & Consent

Ensure each user feels in control of their data at every step.

3. Calm, Reassuring Visual Language

Reduce users anxiety through tone, color, and spacing.

4. Actionable Without Alarm

Present the insights to users in a way that informs without causing fear.

The Journey Map

This Journey Map clarifies how providers interact with GeneSight

reports, aligning workflow stages with system behavior to reduce

cognitive load while preserving clinical accuracy.

Collaboration & Influence

Partnered with cross-functional stakeholders to design and deliver a visually cohesive application that enables users to explore genetic

data and interpret potential healthy indicators.

Final Thoughts & Reflection

Designing within clinical constraints sharpened my ability to prioritize

clarity over novelty. I learned that in high-stakes environments, reducing

cognitive load is not about simplification alone, but about structuring

information to support confident decision-making.
